Driving a different car every day is a privilege of working in the Consumer Reports Cars Editorial department, and it's one I appreciate. But contrary to popular belief, it's not Audi R8s and Porsche 911s every day. (I wish!) In reality, it's living with mainstream cars from each manufacturer spanning the spectrum from entry-level to luxury and using them as we would our own cars. And that means figuring out and using the feature set of each vehicle.
Here are 10 features—five good, five not so good—in current CR test cars that have stood out in my mind.
Best features in new cars 1) Chrysler steering wheel audio controls: These aren't particularly new, but placing the audio controls on the back of the steering wheel is a great use of dead space, and frees up the front of the steering wheel for comprehensive cruise and trip computer controls.
2) Convertible top operation while moving ( Mini , Porsche): These are just two of the manufacturers that offer this feature, but it's a great convenience. While owning a convertible certainly comes with some compromises, the ability to raise the top while in slow-moving traffic when you encounter a rainstorm is a major plus.
Read more »Process Technology, a wet process heating and cooling manufacturer, is introducing its SmartOne line of PTC (positive temperature coefficient) electric immersion heaters at Sur/Fin 2011.
With the SmartOne technology, thermal over-temperature protectors are no longer required for safe operation, the company says, adding that its SmartOne PTC heaters will not burn out in air like traditional resistance heaters.
A PTC heater utilizes solid state ceramic heating elements as its heat source. These devices are “self-limiting” - the maximum temperature is internally limited regardless of the operating conditions. Therefore, these heaters have a built-in safety not previously available in electric immersion heaters. Traditional resistance heaters have the potential for a runaway heat condition if operated out of solution, but a PTC heater can self limit its maximum temperature regardless if operated in water, air, or surrounded by buildup.
If the temperature goes down, so does the resistance (thereby increasing power output). If the heat transfer is restricted, as would happen when i.e. operating in air, the temperature will increase (as will the resistance) resulting in reduced power output. (PTCs are used in car seat warmers or hair dryers for example – the product reaches a predetermined maximum temperature and then turns itself down.)
