iFixit Peeks Inside FBI GPS Tracking Device

The device is powered by four lithium-thionyl chloride D-cell batteries, presumably so agents can track you over time. With a rating of 13,000 mAh on each cell, the GPS device would likely be able to stay powered for 10 to 20 years. Another important consideration is making sure it stays on the car: iFixit said that the magnets are so powerful that the devices mounting brackets need to be broken off it to remove it.

Will iFixit or Wired find the FBI at its doorstep soon? Time will tell. Here are some other interesting highlights from the teardown:

• The device's antenna is actually made up of two: one for the GPS positioning, and another used to send that data to FBI transponders.

• iFixit said that it was apparent that the FBI didn't want anybody tampering with the unit: screws were coated with threadlocker, requiring a power drill to pry the device open.

• The device appears manufactured by the FBI itself, and some of the parts are fairly old: the GPS signal processing unit was from 1999.

Contour sports cameras go semi-pro with new Contour+

The ContourHD and ContourGPS sports cameras are compact, rugged, and (most importantly) inexpensive action cameras that are great for recording epic videos of extreme sports. We use a few of them (along with the competing GoPro HD Hero cam) to record segments for our Car Tech videos and we see them all of the time at motorsports events suctioned to the hoods and roofs of high-powered race cars and auto enthusiasts' daily drivers. Not to rest on its laurels, Contour is adding an upper tier to its line of sports cameras with the Contour+, a prosumer level HD camera that hopefully offers better video and audio quality than the previous units, as well as a few more connectivity options.

Most obviously, the Contour+ steps up over the ContourGPS and ContourHD with its silver metallic chassis. At the business end, the Contour+ also gets a wider 170-degree angle lens (up from the 135-degree lenses of the previous units) with better quality glass. It appears that Contour's trademark dual-alignment lasers for the rotating lens have gone missing--apparently, bumped out by the larger lens--and have been replaced by angle markers etched into the lens' bezel. It may seem that newer Contour+ would be more difficult to aim as a result of this omission, but Contour has a few tricks for the pro user to solve that issue.

My car has a v-kool athermic heat blocker (v-70) installed on the front windshield. When I installed my Mio P350 GPS device I found that it's not able to lock on to any satellites.
Will an external GPS antenna kept INSIDE the car help in locking on to satellites. Or will it have to be placed outside the car?
I have an antenna for my own mio, and although it did work inside the car, the connection was easily interrupted (nothing that i can specifically pin it down to) but once i placed it outside it worked perfectly. It's magnetic and waterproof.

This is similar to the one I got but it's cheaper!
