Five ways to get a better signal for your cell phone

May 17, 2011 |

Are you suffering from too few bars on your cell phone signal? Dropped calls and weak connections can make you feel ill. It’s an all-too-common malady in today’s mobile world. While there may not be a pill that cures the problem, there are some helpful tips that will reduce the pain and keep you in touch while you’re on the go.

Don’t stress too much about your signal in places you seldom visit. These are mild annoyances. Focus your energy instead on resolving signal issues in your primary locations like your work and home (as well as the commute in between). Your frustration level will drop dramatically and you’ll feel like you have a new lease on life.

Learn the five keys ways to improving your poor cell reception below.

Find the Culprit

The reason why you have a poor cell signal may not be obvious. The usual suspect sources for the trouble include the coverage map of your cell service provider, your phone itself, and the particular building or environment in which you are situated. It could even be a combination of the three. Hunt down your signal killer through some simple tests. If possible, have a friend, colleague, or family member with a different phone but the same carrier check their signal in the same place yours is weak. If that person’s signal is strong, you can rule out your carrier coverage map.

Porta-potty set on fire at June's Boat Launch, police say

May 17, 2011 |

An arsonist set fire to a $2,000 portable toilet Monday night in Juniata County, and police say the man stuck around to watch emergency crews respond to June's Boat Launch, along Route 322.

The fiberglass toilet was made by a Landisburg company: Advance Septic Service.

The suspect is described as white, with blond hair, driving a black or dark-colored newer model car, police said.

It had a shark fin-style cell phone antenna on the roof.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lewistown state police at 866-216-2340.

Why are there still car phone antenna’s?

Feb 08, 5329 by HedzRed
I have more than 10 years mobile phone. Works just fine in my car with external antenna NO. I dont have any.
Good in some places such as Nebraska are not all mobile operators. So you get an antenna so you can reach the nearest tower.
  • With the use of a phone that you just keep in your car. They called. 'Car phone' and they need an external antenna.

Or it will be true for radio.

Can existing car phone antenna wire (thru the glass type) be used to connect a mobile CB/Scanner?

Jan 26, 2007 by c0ff3ytime
Antenna wire is similar to TV Cable.
A car phone antenna is tuned for car phone frequencies (800/900/1800/1900MHz depending where you are and what bands it covers). You could use a scanner with it on higher UHF frequencies quite well, however performance would suffer on VHF. Still, it could be a step better than using a tuned rubber duck inside the car. CB is even further off frequency, being around 27MHz. The reception would be shoddy and if you transmitted into it your SWR would be very high and you could ruin your radio. If you replaced the whip with something tunable at the frequencies of interest you could probably use the rest of it. Also, the connector for car phones I believe was a TNC or Mini UHF connector which is different than that used by a scanner (typically BNC) or a CB (also BNC for handheld, SO-239/PL-259 for mobile) so you'd need an adapter to use the connector that's already on the cable.
