Report suggests cost of electric cars matters little to buyers

Most of the concerns for electric car buyers center around how long it takes to charge the car and how far it is able to drive, according to the report. Electric cars are typically limited in how far they will go on a charge, and they can take a long time to recharge. It can take up to 5 hours for some vehicles to charge completely from a dry battery to a full charge. The Nissan Leaf, one of the cheapest electric cars on the market, can only travel around 100 miles before needing to recharge.

Most electric car buyers were concerned about how much money they would save by using an electric car instead of a gasoline-powered car. A quarter of the respondents — the largest segment in the report — said the cost savings over fuel mattered most. That’s because gasoline prices have risen to $4 or more in most places across the United States since the price of crude oil futures rose to around the $100 mark a few months ago.

Only 15 percent of electric car buyers said they were concerned about the cost of an electric car, which can range from $32,780 for the Nissan Leaf to $109,000 for the supercharged Tesla Roadster. (The Roadster can also travel twice as far as the Leaf before the battery runs dry.) The Model S, Tesla Motors’ next car, will come in three different models that can travel between 160 miles and 300 miles before needing a recharge and will cost anywhere from $57,400 for the cheapest model to $77,400 for the model that can travel farthest.

Leaf owner energized about Nissan's future

May 18, 2011 | As happy as he was about getting that car, Lamb was even more excited on May 6 when he became one of the first Rutherford County residents to get a Nissan Leaf. While his new car was built in Japan, the automaker’s all-electric vehicle and the batteries for it will be built in Smyrna starting next year. It’s something that Lamb, a longtime Smyrna resident, is proud to be a part of.

He was on a waiting list to get one of the Leafs for more than a year. And his car was one of the last to make it out of Japan before the country was hit with an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in March. He is one of 1,044 people who have purchased a Leaf since they went on sale in December, according to the most recent figures from Nissan.

Lamb is well aware of what the Leaf could mean to his community. The new Nissan Leaf battery plant here is expected to produced 200,000 batteries each year and the Nissan auto plant in Smyrna is expected to roll out 150,000 Leafs each year. Nissan anticipates creating some 1,300 jobs.

an automotive cranking battery won't last 6 months in a deepcycle application - get the biggest heaviest deep cycle batteries you can afford.

you want to charge your batteries at a starting current that is no greater than 25% of the RC (reserve capacity) rating, or 10% of the AH (amp-hour) rating of the battery.

get a charger that automatically shifts into "float charge" or "maintain mode" when it's finished charging.

this is *not* the same as a "trickle charge".
  • First - you should NOT use automotive battery if you plan to drain it till dead. You should use marine DEEP DISCHARGE battery. They are design to be drained till dead and then recharged.

    If the battery was 70 AMP HOUR, then at 10 AMP, it would take at least 7 hours (plus about 10% more for inefficiency).
