Spring cleaning for your computer and gadgets

Feb 08, 1202 | Provided by

You've already detailed your car, had a garage sale and donated unwanted items to Goodwill. You've changed the air filters in your home and dusted behind the refrigerator. So what is a person with nothing to clean have left to do? I mean, besides work all day, make dinner for the family, plan your summer vacation, read books to the kids before bed, catch up the last season of Mad Men before its premiere, and find a more affordable health care plan? How about devote a little much-needed attention to cleaning up your digital stuff? Sarcasm aside, doing a few simple, uncomplicated things to your tech toys will prolong their life, make them run smoother, and save you time when you are looking for files or that photo of junior in the bathtub.

Clean it up

Sure, it seems obvious, but when was the last time you actually cleaned your computer, iPad screen, camera viewfinder, cell phone, or TV screen? I for one, can barely see the iPad screen due to the amount of filthy and often Cheeto-ed kid hands that molest it while playing Angry Birds

Man, driving on suspended license, asks police to unlock car

Feb 08, 7364 | A Columbia man was cited last week for driving on a license that was suspended -- for the next 15 years -- after he asked police to help unlock his car, according to a news release.

Manor Township Police said that at 9 a.m. on May 8, Officer Matt Wolf was on patrol on Columbia Avenue when he was flagged down by a 39-year-old man in a car wash parking lot.

The man explained that he had locked his keys in his 1992 Dodge Dynasty and asked Wolf for help. Wolf unlocked the car, but as the man drove away, Wolf's in-car computer told him the man did not have a valid license.

Wolf stopped the man a short distance away and cited him for driving on a suspended license. Police later found out the man is not eligible to get his license back for another 15 years.

Police did not release the man's name. Read more »

Questions & Answers

What does it mean when a diagnostic computer cannot read my car's computer when hooked up?

Jun 24, 2007 by Rich
My friend who is a great mechanic tried to read the codes for my car but his device could not read the car' computer.

I was curious of any old codes on the computer. My engine light is not on but it does test itself and turn off when I start the car. Should I even be worried to fix the connection problem or wait until my check engine light comes on?
So then I guess he never bad if you ask us to replace him.
  • If power is not in why you care? All power tools to check in when you start the car out for most. Unit, your friends may not be compatible with your system - not the right module OBD2 OBD1??

Care light, but IF ISN WHO T "or not!?

Can you use your car computer to temporarily disable your car's starter?

Jan 25, 2007 by zNelson24
I plan to lock my car with a computer as renforced security (with a password and stuff), I have seen police use similar methods to restrict habital violators from driving.
I bet you could, but you'll probably need a computer scanner. This analyzes the codes in all systems in your car. YOu can delete these codes and restore them later. Problem is, unless you work for the car manufacturers or a garage, you won't be able to find it. If you can, it may set you back up to $5,000 USD!!! Not worth it, in my book. For a quick disable, just ask if you may borrow the boot thingy from the police...
  • No. Your auto computer is not connected to the starter.
The easiest way is to install a hidden switch connected to your fuel pump.

ScanGauge II Automotive Computer $159.99 ThinkGeek As a general rule geeks like to have access to as much data and statistics as possible. The trip computer tracks your vehicle's maximum speed, average speed, driving time, driving distance, trip fuel economy and several other pieces of trip data. This gadget is easy to install and provides a set of digital gauges, a comprehensive trip computer, and an engine trouble code scan tool. There is an automatic delayed power-down after engine shutoff and automatic power-up when engine is started. The ScanGauge II is simple to use and install and mounts in, on or below the dash. User and vehicle settings are automatically saved. It plugs into the diagnostic OBD-II connector found under the dash on 1996 and newer cars and light trucks. The functions are accessed via a simple on-screen menu interface. We pretty much figure this applies to a geek's motor vehicle as well. Also has these features. The engine trouble code scan tool lets you read standard engine trouble codes as well as clear the "check engine" light and other warning lamps. The digital gauges mode displays four different properties on the screen (for example, fuel economy, battery voltage, coolant temperature, and engine speed). So, to allow you to access extra information about your car we would like to introduce the ScanGauge II Automotive Computer.
