Automakers trail in the great gizmo race

A customer at Rockland Toyota in suburban New York recently asked why he couldn't recharge his cell phone through the USB port built into the otherwise sophisticated Toyota Venza crossover.

Evan Kuperman, the dealership's assistant general manager, took a deep breath. He shrugged his shoulders and smiled.

"Customers want everything to work with everything," Kuperman says of the proliferation of personal electronics. "How are you ever going to make that happen?"

Indeed, how to make that happen is a key challenge for the U.S. auto industry today. Smartphones, iPads, antenna-equipped laptops, MP3 players, and the wide world of Internet connectivity have become so core to American society that automakers are struggling to keep up with the challenge.

And they are not entirely succeeding.

The electronics and telecom industries are advancing at a 21st-century pace of product development. Meanwhile, automakers plod along on three- and four-year model cycles. That discrepancy means that automaker-installed features are becoming outmoded well before a consumer is done with a vehicle.

High fuel prices and a slow economy are making such cars hot but also raising sales prices. So Cars.com and USA TODAY pitted compact sedans meeting strict price and mileage requirements in our latest head-to-head Shootout to help you pick a winner for your garage before car prices get even higher.

The Under 20/Over 35 Shootout judged five cars priced at less than $20,000, before shipping, and rated at more than 35 miles per gallon on the highway.

I am runnin 2 Zeus Z600 Car Stereo and Z4400 Zeus for my mid and hi. I'm the EQ feature, but I want to add a crossover that will allow any audio or if it is a good idea. increase.
crossover will help you choose from the LP / HP and I have both set freq EQ and crossovers feature allows better sound quality to me that you can use them both.

i have a jvc car stereo and a pyramid cr73g crossover
A crossover can boost bass or change frequncies on mid or highs but it depends on the quality of your crossover, but if really works best with more than one amp or a multi-channel amp.

If you wold like the get better tunes without an amp use an EQ
  • It's not for sound improvement.

    A crossover just separates frequencies to specific speakers/subs.
