As Child Safety Week begins, Which? announces the first rear-facing toddler car seat that scored highly enough in our safety tests to be a Best Buy.
Which? has been testing child car seats for many years, but there have always been issues with rear-facing car seats for toddlers - either they weren't safe enough in our crash tests, or they were too tricky to fit properly in a car.
Like all the child car seats that Which? reviews, this 'Group 1' car seat had to undergo tests that exceed the standards manufacturers have to meet by law. Among other things, we crash test child car seats in a side impact, while manufacturers have to ensure only that they're safe in a head-on crash. Group 1 is the category which covers toddlers up to 18kg in weight.
We've reviewed more than 100 child car seats; there are 45 Best Buys and 20 Don't Buys. Which? members can see all these in our child car seats review. To see the new Best Buy, select 'Rearward-facing Group 1 seat' in the 'Compare features' section of our review.
Read more »Planning fun family trips is an important part of our desire to strengthen bonds with and provide happy memories for our children. Okay, now add a pet or two to the mix. Is it possible to travel with kids and pets and still find a great place to stay? The answer is yes! A surprising (and growing) number of lodgings that welcome families with kids and a dog or cat is making it much easier to take everyone along for the trip.
It's important to note that not all kid-friendly hotels allow pets. Nor is it a given that if your poodle is welcome, your toddler must be, too. But the good news is more than half of the hotel respondents to the 2010 Lodging Survey (American Hotel & Lodging Association) have a "pets allowed" policy. Some charge a fee for the privilege and some do not. Others go out on a limb with perks like in-room dog treats, dog parks and pet sitters on call. Here's some of our favorite family-friendly hotel chains, and a few individual properties, that allow pets. Affinia's urban properties offer a comprehensive suite of services geared to children. Its "Kid-Tested, Parent-Approved" package at Affinia Gardens in New York includes a one-bedroom suite with kitchen, fridge stocked with healthy snacks, extra sheets for tent making, Nintendo Wii, board games, a Diaper Genie and outlet covers. The chain is known for its alliance with American Girl; the Affinia Chicago includes shops, events and keepsakes associated with these popular dolls.
