How much difference in sound is there between 6x8 and 5x7 car speakers?

I am replaceing the speakers in my car and the stock rear speakers are 6x8, which is hard to find and when I do find them they are expensive. I was told that a 5x7 will bolt up to 6x8 cut outs, so I am wondering how much difference in sound is there between the 2 speaker sizes? Also what is a recommended speaker for the 5x7? My car is a 1995 Ford Probe.
Most of the 6x8s on the market are just 5x7s with a different housing. Upgrading regardless will produce a better sound so I wouldn't worry much about that. I just put some Infinity Kappa 6x8/5x7s in my Escape and LOVE them, but they're like $140/pair at Best Buy, you might be able to find them cheaper on ebay... Otherwise they've got some Pioneer 6x8s on BB's site for $81, or upgraded Pioneer or Infinity Reference for $110 or so... I had Pioneers in all of my Probes (I've owned 3) cuz they were cheap, they get the job done but Infinity is far superior...

5x7 speakers in my Town Car?

I disconnected the 6x9 speakers in the back of my '89 Town Car and I had to disconnect a gray connector for the wires. I have a pioneer head unit and it's 45 watts per speaker. The stock 6x9's were good but I had a pair of "xXx" 5x7's that were 150 rms and 300 watts peak that I put in today. I used electrical tape to connect the speakers wires from the car to the speakers and they seemed to work fine. Then I mounted them onto the speakers holders that the 6x9's were on and they sound like 10 watt boombox speakers now. Does anything need to be done to the wires? Or do the speakers need to be broken in? Thanks.
There are absolutely no holes involved in this question. There are holders for the magnets that were for the 6x9's that the 5x7's are in now. Should I just take them out of the holders and in boxes?
If you are putting 5x7s in a hole for 6x9s, then there is no baffle, so only the sound being produced from the tweeters would be audble.
