FOR fans of Italian cars -- those with positive recollections, anyway -- the high-profile introduction of the Fiat 500 to the United States this year holds the promise of a long-awaited brand renaissance.

But for the 500 to be a genuine success, paving the way for a full line of European driver's cars to follow, its appeal would have to be more durable than a pretty face and an attractive body. My quest to plumb the 500's inner beauty recently took me on a long drive that included stops in Naples, Verona, Florence, Rome and Venice.

Like the 500, these cities have Italian antecedents with American appeal. The route from Naples, Me., to Verona, N.J., to Florence, S.C., to Rome, Ga., to Venice, Fla., also included a stop in Alexandria -- Virginia, that is -- to sample Fiat 500s from the postwar generation.

On overseas business trips I have admired the 21st-century 500 -- a reincarnation of the diminutive 1957-75 Cinquecento -- squirting around cities like Berlin, Budapest and Stockholm. So when Fiat offered early adopters an initial allocation of American 500s on its United States Web site last year, I put a $500 deposit on a Prima Edizione model and snagged No. 172 before the run of 500 cars sold out in 100 minutes.

Is it good to have a car subwoofer with a very wide frequency response?

So I have been looking for a second car subwoofers.

Now subs are the same and costs, and as I just need to know to sound better.

Show that two subwoofers are made from the same match and has direct views of the same course of power. Judging by frequency response, which is better for a subwoofer:


Subwoofer A:
Has a frequency range of 20-180Hz
(20 on the low end, 180 on the high end)

Subwoofer B:
Has a frequency range of 18-500Hz
(18 on the low end, 500 on the high end)


It'd be great if someone could answer that simple question for me stated above, THANKS!

I would never judege how good a sub is simply based on the frequency range stated. This is going to be nearly a useless spec as it does not tell you much about a sub.

All subs can play all frequencies so this spec is only going to be telling you what range of frequencies the sub is effective in. However, this is not entirely dependent on the sub alone. The enclosure used is also important in how well a sub plays a certain frequency range.

If the frequency range was an important spec then the two subs that you listed would be nearly identical. The difference in the low end is only 2 Hz which is extremely small. Also, the average human can't hear below 20Hz so you won't need to worry about that much. The high range is pretty much useless as well. You won't be playing frequencies above 100Hz through a sub anyways. Those frequencies are going to be played by the speakers up front.

Bottomline, the frequency range is a useless specs almost all the time. The only time it may be useful is if you were comparing a sub with a 20Hz low end frequency to a sub that has a low end of 50Hz.In case you may well choose to play sub-20Hz low frequency.

But again I do not see too much in this spec. More details on what is sub-brands and read reviews to learn what people are talking about.

Is my car subwoofer compatible with the amp I plan on buying?

I am buying an Orion Cobalt CO8001 amp and a Pioneer Premier TS-W1008D2 subwoofer for my new car. What I want to know if those two would pair up fine. The RMS of the amp is 400 watts @ 2ohms and the rms power of the sub is 350 watts at 2ohms. The amp has a frequency response of 20-30,000 Hz and a variable low pass filter of 50-500 Hz. The frequency response of the sub is 20-180 Hz.

Yes, but you will have to wire that subwoofer in series for a 4 ohm load. that will mean you're getting 300 watts. not 400.

that subwoofer you picked out is dvc. and each coil is 2 ohms. If it was a svc 2 ohm woofer you'd be getting 400 watts. but its dvc. and you have to hook up both coils. if you wire in parallel you get 1 ohm. if you wire in series you get 4 ohms.

if you want the 400 watts at 2 ohms then get the dvc 4 ohm version.
