Blast it! ACLU protects teeth-rattling car music

In its long history of empowering nuisances that shatter civility, the ACLU has chalked up another victory.

This time, it’s a statewide noise abatement law in Florida aimed at the rolling boom boxes whose subwoofers give unwary bystanders an overall massage, often accompanied by obscenities.

As the Tampa Tribune’s Keith Morelli neatly summarizes :

“The throbbing, molar-rattling bass punctuated with profanity laced lyrics coming from the car in front of you carries the same weight as a political candidate driving down the street asking for votes with a bullhorn.”

That’s pretty much what the ACLU argued in an amicus brief and what the Sixth Judicial Circuit for Pinellas Country decided in striking down the law, which curbs car music loud enough to be heard 25 feet away.

ACLU attorney Andrea Flynn Mogensen, who filed the brief on behalf of Richard Catalano of Clearwater, a lawyer who likes to blast his stereo, said of the state, “If they were trying to prevent the nuisance of noise, there is no difference in loud music and political speech.”

What causes hearing loss in 1 of 5 US teens?

A recent health study from the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that 1 out of 5 U.S. teens have observable hearing loss, a 30 percent increase over the last 15 years. More than a third of these cases are caused by over-exposure to excessive sound levels, like loud music or lawnmowers. Dr. John House of the House Research Institute explains how these hearing issues are caused.

"We're more prone to having a problem with higher frequency exposure, so a low frequency sound is not as damaging than a higher frequency," says House.

The problem isn't subwoofers and car window-rattling bass, but seemingly innocuous headphones. "Young people are listening to their iPods at a very high level, and wearing earbuds which puts [music] right into their ear."

While hearing loss is permanent, it's completely preventable.

That's why the House Research Institute and Kiss leader Paul Stanley joined forces to educate teens on how to protect their hearing at "Sound Rules! A Sound & Hearing Celebration." The after-school event took place at the Director's Guild of America Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 12.

Car subwoofers how do I know what is good?

I am looking for subs for my car perferably 12's and I don't have a huge budget. I was wondering on the cheaper subwoofers does anyone know about them like plye, legacy and subs in the lower rang. Nothing like JL or kicker. Also I was wondering if a cheap amp at walmart might work? I want some bass to shake the car a little but don't want extreme bass. I want it to sound nice not to just shake the car.
most people want cheap car audio. which is fine. the problem is, that after they get there stuff, there disapointed, and thought it would be better then it really is. so having said that here is my advise to you.

first off, if you want a little bass, just so the lows in the car sound good, then get a 10". they generally sound better then 12s but are not as loud. there also cheaper. next is try to get a sub with a low rms. that way you dont need to get a big expensive amp. to get a sub with a limited budget, that doesnt sound like a*s, you need to resort to the internet. check out sites like www.woofersect.com. i know they have MB Quart woofers on sale right now. i thin there 70% off. also dont be afraid to buy a new sub off ebay. infact i recomend you buy a Boston Acoustics G2, a 10" or 12" is up to you, off ebay. they go for about $100. trust me, its worth a little extra money for it. you will not find a better sounding sub for less money. i can almost promise you that.

good deals are out there. i'll put a link to the Boston sub on the bottom where i list my sources. save up a little money, and get stuff that doesnt suck. otherwise you will be unhappy and spend more and more money on a system. which over time, can be tons of money.

    you can learn the easy way or the hard way. I started with a 15" Jenson and a "Rockwood" amplifier i bought at a flea market.

    look i know what you want to here. but i know better than to tell you to pick up some jenky sony xplode woofer and a kenwood amplifier.

    the point is, installation is somewhat tedious, you're going to have to route RCAs/power/ground/remote, with that in mind, try and do it right the first time.

    Do summers get hot where you live?You can fry eggs on the amps not to mention waste of their circuit.

    Make sure you measure at least 10 power and ground, 8 If you want to play safe.

I wanted to know what was the best brand of car subwoofers there is. I was going to get a pair of hifonics subwoofers but i don't really know how they sound. I know JL's are really good when it comes to hard clean bass.
I too love my Infinity subwoofer.
  • I have an Infinity in my Mustang and its damn good. I can feel the virbation through the seat and sometimes the steering wheel.
