Cydle i30 case brings OTA digital TV to the iPhone

Cydle wants to turn your iPhone into a portable TV.  The company’s i30 case features an antenna that can receive ATSC digital TV signals, allowing users to watch free, live TV on their iPhone anywhere they can receive an ATSC signal.

The i30 case covers the back and bottom of the iPhone, and attaches to the phone via 30-pin dock connector.  The case has an internal rechargeable battery that provides up to 3 hours of TV viewing.  The i30 also comes with a car kit, including a windshield mount and power adapter, so you can watch TV in the car – ideally when you’re not driving.

To watch TV with the i30, just download and open Cydle’s free MobileTV app.  The app automatically scans the air for available channels, so users don’t have to manually check which channels are available.  Interestingly, the i30 streams video to the iPhone via WiFi connection, not via the iPhone’s 30-pin dock connector.

Will the tv tuner in my car stop working once everything goes digital?

It depends on any TV in your car has a digital tuner or if it is analog. That if my car is older than 3 years with an opportunity to analog tuner will stop working.

Is HDTV supposed to do this??? (No pay service, but I do have a digital tuner TV)?

Ok, my family juuust bought a new digital TV, 42", brilliant color, blah blah blah. Looks great. And yes, it has a digital tuner.

Ok, now... we don't have cable TV. Or Satelite TV. ... Just REGULAR, NON-PAY, absolutely free TV (Yes, there are a few dozen people such as myself still on this earth). Basically, we use the antenna on our rooftop for reception.

We also don't have that an HDTV digital converter box... But I thought that built-in digital tuner would take care of that.

Problem being...

Often times - and seemingly in correlation with bad weather - Our TV's picture and sound will "skip" around, much like that of a CD player in your car when you hit a large pothole or something. It flickers and gets choppy.

I don't understand?!? Our previous TV was 100% absolutely FINE with reception. Not ONE flicker or anything.

So is it normal for the new HDTV to come in like this?? Would a converter box fix it? (remember, we already have a built-in tuner on the TV).
A converter would only help if the digital tuner in your TV was defective or was cheap to begin with. (What brand is your HDTV?)

Only if you have bad signal quality.

With a government coupon, you can get a Zenith/Insignia converter with a state of the art tuner for about $20. Probably worth that just for trouble shooting your antenna. Especially if you bought one of the cheap brands of TVs. You can always sell or give it away if it turns out you don't need it.

Your HDTV also has an analog tuner. What kind of analog reception do you get with the same TV & antenna? Digital tuners have particular problems with conditions that cause ghosting in analog signals.
